In 1970 I decided on 'Carpenter' as my career choice. It wasn't until late in 1971 that I landed my first job with a reputable residential building contractor.
A 'building boom' was just beginning here in the Lakeland Area of northern Wisconsin. Chasing better wages and better quality work, I worked for several contractors in the first few years. We built a lot of truly custom homes. With few exceptions, the cabinetry in these homes was built by us on-site.
The manufactured cabinet industry, like the manufactured housing industry in general - and like me - was just getting off the ground and on-site built cabinets was the norm here.
As the use of manufactured kitchen and bathroom cabinets increased, so did the number of companies manufacturing them. But the 'special situations' which are best served by the type of service I offer still exist - and presumably always will.
By 1976 I was operating my own business as Gordon A. Hastreiter/DBA Custom Building & Remodeling. In May of 1994 I incorporated under the name of Gordon A. Hastreiter & Co., Inc./DBA Custom Building & Remodeling.
So, from 1971 to the present time I have been working with homeowners to fulfill whatever particular wishes they present me with - and there have been no two exactly alike.
As of October 2006, my wife, Yvonne, and I have been married 35 years, and have made our home in Northern Wisconsin. My custom building and remodeling business began at that time, and during the first three years of marriage, we built and sold two houses and while building a third house, our first son was born. We moved into that house, and 32 years later we are still living in that spec home.
We raised two sons in that house, and have made major overhauls over the years, including new cabinets built with a mixture of oak and cherry.
When it comes to creating custom cabinets and undertaking remodeling projects, I believe it takes a personal connection. As an artisan and carpenter, I believe it is important to understand the wishes and the styles my clients embrace. Creating custom cabinets is a collaborative process.
